Hammers To Regret Cole Release?

After 7 years with West Ham, Carlton Cole was released back in June.
When Cole's release was announced; most West Ham fans weren't complaining, in his last season with the Irons Carlton failed to make any sort of impact and was seen as more of a cover option for Andy Carroll.

It was the 2008-09 season where Carlton really shone for West Ham, scoring a dozen goals in all competitions, this good form earned him an England call up in the process.

At times Cole showed pure brilliance upfront; scoring magnificent goals in particular against Birmingham in the Carling Cup Semi-Final, and a superb team goal against Wigan-and although he wasn't the most consistent of performers we all tired our hardest to back him.

With a deal for a new frontman looking no closer, are their individuals within West Ham that will regret letting Carlton Cole go?
The next striker signed is going to play back-up to Carroll anyway so Cole wouldn't be the worst player we could have retained.

With that being said I feel letting Cole go was the right move for both club and player, at times he performed well but it was too much of a rarity; lets not forget Cole has not left without interest with various clubs looking into the possibility of signing him-but I believe Cole's best years are well and truly behind him.

Could we regret letting Cole go if come September we haven't signed a new striker?
