Arsenal Captain Linked. But Why?

As a West Ham fan you can expect our club to be linked with copious amounts of players every transfer window, most of the deals are highly unlikely and never materialise and instead we end up scrapping the bottom of the barrel.

The most amusing rumors as of late is that of Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen being linked with a move to our club. It was reported and promptly confirmed by manager Sam Allardyce that we are interested in signing the Belgium international as he is currently struggling to find first team opportunities at Arsenal and our injury crisis at the back would see this a a good deal, for West Ham in particular.

As much as I would like this deal to happen, it won't!
We are struggling to attract decent players to the club and the likely hood of this deal happening is a realistic as Carlos Tevez returning and saving us from relegation.

What annoys me about this deal is that it doesn't show any realism, we all know Vermaelen isn't going to join and I feel that the news was put out there to keep us fans happy - and try and convince us that we are trying to sign players and then when deal doesn't work out at the end of the transfer window; when we haven't made significant additions to the squad the board and manager will say 'well we tried'.

How come teams like Norwich, Aston Villa and Fulham can attract players to their clubs - and they are in the same position as us?

  1. Players don't want to come to WHU - at present the club is a joke. B'ham fans warned us about these owners, and they were right. As for Allardyce, he bought the majority of players we have, whereas the 'academy' players - including the over-idolised Noble, Tomkins and Collison - aren't of the quality required. Of the whole squad, only Reid and maybe Adrian are decent squad level. As for Carroll, if he can stay fit he will also be decent squad level, but hardly a world class player. . But when you look at supposedly 'crap' teams like Sunderland and Palace, even the most die-hard fan must realize we are going down - they play with more spirit than us, and most importantly have changed their managers recently. Even Fulham are 'better' than us.... As for getting a new manger, who would come and work with these mediocrities ? Pardew - no thanks - I remember he presided over a seriously split dressing room, definitely not a unified club.

    1. Well said.
Worrying times ahead and with reinforcements that we were 'promised' not interested in joining we can only hope for the best.
The latest player to be linked is Leeds Winger/Forward El Hadji Diouf, that's probably the only deal that I could see happening!
