Last night we were knocked out of the Capital One Cup against makeshift rivals Sheffield United. The game wasn't particularly riveting viewing but it looked as if it would go our way after recently acquired Diafra Sakho scored on his full debut after a neat assist from youngster Reece Burke.
Going into half time at one nil up; I was feeling optimistic but just over ten minutes after half time the score was 1-1 after Winston Reid scored an own goal. From that point on neither team looked as if they had that clinical edge to find another goal and the game soon went into extra time, then penalties, where Sheffield united got the victory after another new boy Enner Valencia missed the only penalty.
Although some fans will be disappointed that we lost out to Sheffield United I'm not.
I know it has become a cliche but success in the competition was never on the cards so getting knocked out early gives us the chance the focus on the Premier League. I was happy to see Sakho score his first goal for the club and hopefully we'll see more of the same and fellow and I thought fellow new boy Diego Poyet looked lively, as did Reece Burke and Ravel Morrison. So there are definitely positives to take from the game.
I won't dwell on this one as we had a decent cup run last year that ended in inhalation, so it came as no surprise that we fell down at the first hurdle this time. The only thing I worry about is how it may affect the team going into Saturdays game with Southampton, the only reason I say this is that after it was announced that Captain Kevin Nolan is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after picking up a shoulder injury in training - and we all know how Nolan is Big Sam's golden boy so lets hope he doesn't start blaming any poor performances on that fact.
