Within the past week two West Ham players (Matt Jarvis and Joe Cole), have both talked about their desire to win trophies with the club and the genuine possibility of that happening.
As a West Ham fan its great to hear such optimism coming from our players, although we're still a long way off from Champion League glory that doesn't mean that we can't have a go at the FA Cup or Capital One Cup, if teams like Wigan and Bradford can do it, we certainly can!
I still believe that it would be unwise to get too out of our depth at this current moment in time, after-all we have been back in the Premiership for a year so getting too confident could be disastrous if we didn't evaluate the risk factors.
Although a decent cup run can benefit the team and fans in some ways there are ways it doesn't, firstly It can distract players and hinder a teams league form. If we look at Wigan, Portsmouth, and Birmingham, they soon perished to the lower leagues after winning a domestic cup so its good to always remain focused on the league.
I think most of us would be able to agree that if it came down to winning a cup or Premier League survival; we'd pick survival.
I'm not saying we are going to end up like any of these teams mentioned, Im merely stating that Cup Glory isn't always the solution to a clubs problems.
As I said at the beginning of this article; its great to hear such optimism from the players but personally I'm still focusing on survival for the next season or two!
