Downing Linked Again

News has resurfaced that West Ham are willing to offer Stewart Downing a fresh start from his disappointing Liverpool spell. A couple of weeks back news originally surfaced that West Ham were hoping to snap up the Liverpool winger; in an attempt to help assist Andy Carroll.

Iv expressed my feelings towards signing Downing in the past, for the right price I think he could probably be worth it. £6 million is the reported fee thats being thrown about; for a player who was signed for £20 million only 2 years ago from Aston Villa.
Thats a dramatic drop in value, should that act as a warning to West Ham?
Or was that the legend that is 'King Kenny' paying well over the odds again; for a player who has failed to impress?

Predominantly played as a left sided winger its viewed as a deal that would help Andy Carroll, with Downing delivering crosses to the big frontman. But is that people assuming that Downing would Help Carroll rather than having any real concrete evidence to believe so?
The Carroll and Downing link-up didn't work at Liverpool, if it did Carroll would still be at Liverpool; scoring goals in the process-and Downing wouldn't be linked with a move away.

I'm also under the impression that the probable signing of Stewart Downing would prove to be the end of any supposed search for a new striker, a new frontman has to be versatile and be able to play on the wing and assist Andy Carroll in a few areas, rather than being one dimensional and although Downing can't play up front; I can't see us splashing out more money on players, we can't afford it!

I'm still not totally convinced on Downing, his wages are very high (£80,000) and he would have to take a wage cut in order to join, unless West Ham arrange a deal where Liverpool continue to pay some of Stewart's wages, a similar deal to Joe Cole's.

Should we focus on Downing or look at striking alternatives?
