Chelsea Game Offers Up No Surprises

Although yesterdays game against Chelsea wasn't a must win game, we were all hoping that we could upset the odds like we did this time last year.

Us West Ham fans could be forgiven for thinking that our promising start to the game would actually lead to some success but soon after Chelsea started to dominate, and after a terrible pass back by right back Guy Demel, Chelsea starlet Oscar pounced on the ball and was brought down by Hammers keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen. I hate to admit it but a penalty was correctly awarded and Jussi was lucky not to get sent off. Ex West Ham player Frank Lampard stepped up and confidently converted the penalty.

After that I felt that the team's confidence suffered a serious dent and Oscar added to our problems making it 2-0 with a great shot outside the box.

What worries me is that we are playing quite well and holding our own but its amateur mistakes that are costing the team. Against Norwich we were by far the superior team in the first half and it showed with a one goal lead, although the second half was awful and we got beat by a team who are in the same situation as us and who we can't afford to drop points against.

I felt that Stewart Downing and Ravel Morrison played well but we didn't have that Andy Carroll like striker to pounce on the crosses that Downing was supplying the team with. Our problems were emphasised when Big Same took off Joe Cole and Jack Collison in the first half for Modibo Maiga and Mohamed Diame. Whenever a sub is made in the first half of the game it's always a worry and normally an indication of how worried the manager actually is.

Lampard's third and final goal really was a kick in the teeth as we looked the more likely to grab a goal but in the end it was a well deserved win for Chelsea.

The best case scenario would be for Andy Carroll to get back to fit and playing ways that still looks a way off so it's looks as-if we will have to wait until January to make a couple of new signings.

The question has to be asked, will it be too little to late by then?
